The trade union waves of early 1970’s and the students uprising of May 1975 inspired a group of teachers to come forth with a Union for teachers and UPSET (Union of Private Secondary Education Teachers) was subsequently formed. In fact, the word UPSET was decided to upset the authorities. This was a turning point in the quest to fight for the rights and welfare of Teachers in the Private Secondary Schools in Mauritius.
On 16th July 1976 UPSEE (Union of Private Secondary Education Employees) was registered as an official Trade Union. Since then, a lot of struggles have been conducted by different Union Leaders at different times. UPSEE has constantly remained faithful to its objectives.
